"Chinoise Verseuse, Model No. 39" (Chinese Tea Server)

This automaton features a bisque head made by Jumeau, a leading French doll maker. Jumeau created fine porcelain dolls in the mid-19th century in response to Germany's monopoly on bisque and china doll heads. Created at a time when there was great European interest in the Orient-even if it was misrepresented-Lambert marketed this figure as a "Chinese tea server." Once set in motion, the woman nods, turns her head, moves the tray, and "pours" the tea to music.
